1 It was noticed that yang points left as pellets overnight would strengthen through to their yin counterpoints, while the yin points had no effect on the yang. A set of yang acupuncture immune points were found equidistant to certain landmarks on the limbs and feet.

THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

It always seemed probable that there would be exact correspondences between acupuncture points and endocrine organs, the question was how to ascertain the relationships. A rough map for evaluating endocrine imbalance was evolved by the chiropractors, just testing over the areas such as the pancreas or the thyroid. The test goes like this: the patient extends an arm, the practitioner touches the endocrine area, and pulls down on the arm. If the arm goes weak and loses resistance, then most likely the endocrine organ is deficient. Giving that particular glandular substance would usually make the arm become strong.
Chiropractors such as Dick Versandahl D.C. pioneered a whole series of reflex points more than 40 years ago. A whole system of nutritional treatment was based on this type of diagnosis. Yet often times glandular substances would have to be given for years because the organs themselves were not treated. The right acupuncture points might be able to strengthen those reflex areas as strongly as the glandulars.
Here is an example. The adrenal glands are frequently stressed and exhausted. Copious amounts of DHEA or adrenal glandular are given to supplant the diminished output of these hormones. The chiropractic adrenal test area is around K 18. A strong arm muscle would become weak touching that area, if the adrenals are weak. One checks along the Kidney channel to look for points that will strengthen that reflex. Stainless steel pellets on two different Kidney channel locations strengthen that reflex area. One is above the knee on under the distal head of the femur, the other is below the knee, under the proximal head of the tibia. (The area on the knee crease produces no result.)
The upper leg point relates to the adrenal cortex, and the lower point to the adrenal medulla. Homeopathic vials of those area must be used to ‘prove’ the case. The adrenal cortex vial only shows a correspondence to the upper point, while the adrenal medulla vial creates a strengthening response to the lower point. The patient holds each of the adrenal vials while the tester touches the Kidney points and tests a strong arm. The arm will only stay strong when touching the ‘correct’ point.
Vials are extensively used by chiropractors as a sort of energetic digital picture of various anatomical areas and substances. They consist of salt water imbued with an energetic vibration that represents either and organ or a hormone or even a bacteria. They seem to be a fairly reliable way to access areas or functions that cannot be perceive through Chinese medicine alone. Chiropractors have been using them for years to evaluate deficiencies and then confirming those deficiencies with blood tests. Blood tests showing the results of needling these endocrine points would be the ideal way to confirm these point locations, but that is beyond my means. While this makes the entire project speculative from a scientific standpoint, it still remains interesting.
What was really interesting was the difference between what the arm and leg points treated. The Kidney and Heart channels, for example, are considered both branches of the same river channel known as the Xiaoyin. The arm points of this extended channel would treat the hormones, while the leg points would treat the gland itself. Pellets were placed on the arm at Heart 3 above and below the joint. The vials relating to the adrenal hormones cleared, such as DHEA, cortisone and norepinephrine, but not the glands themselves. StrengthenIng the leg points would enhance glandular function, so both sets of vials cleared: the hormones and the adrenal glands. This case illustrates the difference between root and branch.
The endocrine system could not be full decoded until some of the channels were rerouted. The Liver channel follows the interior channel of leg all the way up through the thigh, chasing along the bone like a river in a canyon. It does not move medial to the Spleen at the Knee, nor does it move to the middle of the thigh above the knee. How can this be proved? Place a pellet on the liver point on the leg channel and then on it’s corresponding point on the Korean hand model. If both points are correctly placed it will create a strong field that can be tested with an O-ring. (Place thumb and middle finger together and try to pull it apart.) If you place a pellet on the leg on the accepted location of liver 7 and then put a pellet on it Korean point, you will not get a strong O-ring connection.
Because it is the Jueyin partner to the Liver, the Pericardium channel also follows along the radius and humerus medial to the Lung channel. Around the shoulder the Pericardium river follows the clavicle, but on the hand it follows the conventional pathway. The old Liver and Pericardium channels will get a slight amount of strength in an O-ring comparison, as they seem to be a reflection of the true channel, but the real channels will give a much stronger response.
Lyme ProtocolThe Kidney channel as it courses through the foot originates underneath the Spleen and Liver channels, and follows the same curves of the bones. K1 is found right underneath Liver 1; K2 is found media to the Essentials’ K1, under the distal head of the first metatarsal. K3 is under the proximal head, and can be accessed from SP 4. K 4 feels like the source, and is found under the cuniform, accessible from the Essentials’ K2. The correct points for the endocrine glands could not be correctly confirmed until these new points were figured out.
These points remain tentative as it is often difficult to discern whether a point is being affected by a brainstem area on the Kidney channel, or a feedback mechanism, or whether it is the actual endocrine gland itself. Regard this as a first explorer’s map of a region. Some areas for neurotransmitters and enzymes are included for their general interest.

Adrenals:

Cortex: above K 10 knee crease/HT3. It consists of three zones: Zona Glomerosa: approximately 2 inches above K 10. Hormone: Aldosterone – two inches above heart 3. Aldosterone affects Angiotenstion I, II and Renin. Zona fasciculata: approx. 1 inch above knee joint. Hormones: Cortisol, ACTH, DHEA – Ht 3.

Zona Reticularis: sex hormones (adrenal androgen, progesterone and estrogen): I/2 inch above knee joint.

Medulla: 1 inch below distal to knee joint on Kidney meridian/1 inch distal to H 3. (UB 23 innervates parasympathetic activity, while GB25 treats Sympathetic activity to both the medulla and cortex.) Hormones: norepinephrine and epinephrine.

Cholecystikinine: Half way up thigh on LV channel.

Dopamine: under proximal head of femur on K channel, and under head of humerus on Heart channel. There is also a relationship to a point 5 cun (three inches) below knee joint on K meridian. Gastrin, Intrinsic factor: LV 6 Upper – 4 fingers width below the curve of the femur, close to the bone.

Histamine: There are two type of histamine, one that produces sinus mucous and an other that produces stomach acid in reaction to food allergens. The sinus histamine is treated through the points LV 2-4, while the gut secretions are mediated through the combination of LV 5, LV 6, & LV 9, used together.

Hypothalamus: K3/HT 8 Lacrimal Glands: LV 11 a/PC 2, under the head of femur. Lymph Glands: SP 10 and above SP10/LU 5 above elbow.

Ovaries and testes: LV 8 thru 10. Hormones: testosterone (approx. 3 cun above LV 9), estrogens, progesterones /above PC 3.

Pancreas: SP 3A/LU 10. UB 20,21. ST 19-20 Hormones: Insulin: SP3a/LU10, Glucagon: SP5/LU 9, Somatostatin: SP 3/LU10. Insulin receptors: SP 7. Isles of Langehorn: SP 4. Exocrine function: lipase - SP 5. Innervation: GB 24, LV 13, SI 8, SJ 9.

Parotid gland: New K 4. Salivary: New K5 (Essentials’ K 6) Sublingual: New K 6 (Essentials’ K 5)

Parathyroid glands: LV 4/PC 7 Parathyroid hormone: Osteocalcin. Controls the utilization of Vitamin D and Calcium. The Marshal protocol claims that vitamin D creates toxins in Lyme patient; I find that if the parathyroid is cleared and functional, then Vitamin D no longer tests negatively. Again you will find parathyroid influenced both by LV 4 on the foot and especially where the liver meridian flares around the tibia to join the ankle bone. Many clients will need supplements of parathyroid hormone along with calcium to strengthen bones and teeth and prevent cramping.

Pineal: K 1 (new)/Ht 2. Hormone: Melatonin. Helps with sleep.

Pituitary:

Anterior: LV 2/PC9. Hormones: Growth Hormone, Prolactin: LV 2/PC9, Prolactin

Releasing Hormone: SI 1. TSH, ACTH, FSH. Luteinizing hormone.

Posterior: LV 3a/PC 8. LV 3 is found on the tarsal metatarsal joint. There is also some connection with Lv 7, possibly through a feedback mechanism with the sex hormones. (LV 7 is found on the medial side of SP 9, on the curve of the bone, not where we were taught in school.) Hormones: ADH, Vasopressin, (controls frequency of urination) Oxytocin. Intermediate: LV 3/PC 8.

Sebacious glands: LV 11/PC2 distal to lacrimal gland location.

Secretin: 2-3 cun above SP10.

Sex glands: ovaries and testes: LV 9 and above. ST 28-29. Innervation: GB 28-30/UB53-54. Hormones: estrogen: SP 9, testosterone and progesterone: above PC 3.

Seratonin: turned on with gastric hormones

Skin (as an organ): LV10/PC3 ( halfway up thighbone). Innervation: SJ 13, SI 9. Dermis: LV 3/PC 8.

Epidermis: Lu 7/SP 6. Stratum: K3/HT 9. Subcutaneous: K8/ HT 5.
Sweat Glands: LV12/PC 1. UB50/GB31.

Thalamus: K2 (new)/HT 9

Thymus: Lower thymus: SP 7/LU 6 a. Upper thymus: SP 8/LU 6.

Thyroid: New K7/HT 7. Also above and below both. (I am always using K 7 as the Essentials’ K 3, right below their K7.)

Hormones: Thyroxin: H7 in palm, TSH: HT 7, T 3: Ht 4. T 3: right above K 7-HT 5. In practice one treats the root so: T-3 is treated more above K7, thyroxin at K 7, and TSH is closer to K 6.

Vomeronasal Gland: This is the original smell gland, which allows animals to distinguish between family and foe. In humans it is vestigial, but I believe that in Lyme its weakness contributes to the difficulty of the immune system in distinguishing between normal and toxic fumes. LV 1

Acupressure Points

Bone Ponts:
Arm bones: LU 1-11. On the arms, it seems that Lung treats the periosteum, while Heart treats the bone itself. LU 1-2/HT 1-2 treats the scapula and head of humerus, Lu 3-4/HT 4 treats the humerus, LU5-9/HT4-8 treats the radius, LU 11/HT9 treats distal digits. The point location for Lung 2 may actually be found in the bicepital groove, since qi seems to manifest most strongly under the heads of the bones. Lung 1 would then be the entire pool found under the acromium.
Hands
Hand bones (carpals): LU 7/ HT 7. Thumb joint and proximal digit joints: LU 10/HT 8. Distal digit joints: LU 11/HT 9.
Hip
UB 53-54 treats the hip bone. SP 12-16 treats the periosteum of the hip and acetabulum. GB 29-30 treats the head of the femur. SP 10-SP 11 treats the periosteum of the head of the femur. SJ 1-5 treats the joint capsule.
Leg and feet bones:
On the legs, it seems that Spleen treats the periosteum, while Kidney treats the bone itself. Toes: SP 1-5, K 1-6, Tibia: SP 6-9, K6-10. Fibula: GB 33-39. Femur: SP 10-11, K1-11.
Spine
Sacrum and coccyx: UB 31-35. UB 54-55. Add a huato line for the matrix. articulating surface with hip: SJ 1-3
Spinal column: UB line at level of points. Body or matrix of bone of spine, discs: Huatos. Facets: SJ at level of arm if hanging by side. Lumbar facets= SJ 4-5.
Spinous Process: ST 12-30. Sacral spinous processes: ST 30-31. Cervical: ST 9-10.
Transverse processes: The transverse processes are treated by the outer UB line, at the level you find them. For example, UB 52 treats the transverse process of the 2nd and 3rd Lumbars (UB 22-23). Articulating processes: UB 39-54 (base of butt) with the Kidney Channel all along inner thigh at the top of the femur where there is tenderness. There are no official acupuncture points along there, but if a vertebrae is infected you will find a weakness and often tenderness.
Thoracic ribs: SJ 5-13.
Head Bones
Lyme can be found energetically in all head bones, probably spreading from the sinuses, jaws, and teeth. The Sphenoid and the Nasal bone are mostly cartilage, and therefore easily permeated by the Lyme spirochete.
Frontal bones: ST 25-12. If these bones are not adequately treated, then the points that rest on top of these areas (ST 1-7), will not stay strong.(ST1-12 control cranial nerves.)
ST 41-44 with SP 1-5 jaw under upper back teeth and frontal sinuses
ST 36-40 (and down the leg): jaw under upper front teeth & molars
ST 35-30: maxilla or upper jaw bone
ST 30-25: the eye socket and ridge
ST 25-13: frontal bone or forehead
Hyoid bone: Lu 2
Jaw bone (Maxilla): ST 41-ST 36. The front teeth area is treated by ST 36, back teeth area by ST 41-44. If infection moves further up the jaw towards the eyes the points are ST 35-31.
Jaw (mandible): LI 1-20.
LI 1-4: under lower front teeth, condyle: LI 14. Mastoid process: LI 15, 16.
Nasal bone: LI 1-5 Vomer: SI 8 and area above it on humerus. Ethmoid: K 1-5
Occiput: UB 67-40.
Palantine bones: palate: SI 1-7 vertical: SI 8-10
Parietal bone: GB 24-41
GB 44-34 affects the occipital juncture with the Parietal Bone.

GB 33-26 affects juncture with temporal bone.
GB 26-16 affects juncture with frontal bone.
GB 16-1 affects the center line of the Parietal (GB 1 towards the back juncture with the occiput.)
Sphenoid bone: SJ 1-23
Outer wing of sphenoid: SJ 13-16 (16 at top of bone). Inner wings of the Sphenoid bone: SJ 17-23. The Pituitary gland is housed by the Sphenoid bone, so it is crucial to clear both yin and yang aspects of these areas. SJ 4 seems to treat the area surrounding the pituitary gland.
Temperal: LI 6-20. Styloid process: LI 12. Mastoid process: LI 15.
Trachea: Lu 3-4
Zygomatic: SI 9-19.

The nervous system helps turns the immune system back on.
Brain
There is a basic map to all the madness.
  • The Yin meridians on the feet treat the lobes of the brain while the Yin meridians on the hand treat the cortices.
  • Stomach Meridian treats the cranial nerves.
  • Gall bladder Meridian treats the Sympathetic ganglia to visceral effectors.
  • Bladder Meridian treats the sympathetic nervous system
  • San Jiao treats the sympathetic, and Small Intestine treats parasympathetic innervation to the glands of the head.
None of this will stay clear without clearing the sinuses and the bones of the skull.
Lobes:
Cerebellar Anterior: K 5. Cerebellar Posterior: K 4. Frontal: SP 1-5. Occipital lobe: K 1-5. Parietal: LV 9-14. Limbic Lobe: K 10-11 on thigh. Temporal: LV 1-5 (Color area: LV 4. Tool area: LV 3. Nouns: LV 1).

Misc. Brain Areas:
The brain is very difficult to map, since it thrives on connections and networking. The following are mere notes on points that seem to influence certain vials related to different areas.
Broca’s Area: HT 5
Caudate nucleus: HT 2
Center vasomotor: K 10 3 inches above joint
Central canal: LV 4-5
Cerebellum: HT 5-7, K 4 (posterior), K5 (anterior) -cortices and lobes

Cerebrum: LU 9-11
Cingulate: LV 10
Corpus callosum: PC 1-3

condyle.
3rd Ventricle: K8
4th Ventricle: K 9
Lateral ventricle: 3 inches below knee crease on K channel.
Wernike’s: PC 1, new location under collarbone, medial to ST 13.
The brain has considerable plasticity. A person with a stroke to the parietlal lobe can end up using the temporal lobe to take over lost functions. Deaf and blind people also use other parts of the cortex to enhance their senses. Therefore, none of these point locations are fixed.
UB1-10 forms the spine of the brain, clears the area underneath. These are the railroad tracks into the brain.
The brain is the hardest area to keep clear. The Lyme spirochetes love neurons, and once they get in there, they have a lot to feast on. The softer bones of the skull; the sphenoid, the palate, the sinus and nasal bones make it easier for the spirochetes to dig into and re-infect the brain.
Nerves
Cranial nerves: ST 1-12.
I – Olfactory: ST 8 this is actually the first point on the ST meridian.
II - Optic: ST 1
III - Oculomotor: ST 2

K 3 (new location), LU 7 strengthens the vial related to the Corticospinal tracts.
GB 41, SJ 5 treats the Rubrospinal tracts.
SI 4, UB 60 treats the Spinothalamic tracts.
SP 4, PC 6 treats the Spinocerebellar tracts.
ST 41/ LI 4 treats the Fasciculus Cuneatus and Fascululus Gracilis.

Miscellaneous Points
None of these points are written in stone.
Appendix: LI 1-2 right side. Ascending colon: right LI Descending colon: left LI Sigmoid: left LI 5 Anus: left Li 1.
Arteries
LU 9/SP 5-master points for both arteries and veins (LU 9 for upper body and SP 5 for lower body). Coronary: PC 2- 3. Arms: Lu meridian. Legs: Spleen on leg. Pretty much the closest point controls the area. The huato area of the ren channel found on the Korean hand model controls the aorta on the torso, and that same channel extending to the tip of the mid finger gets the arteries of the head. Reproductive Organs
There is much controversy about whether Lyme is transferred through seminal fluids. All active partners that I have seen test to be infected in the sexual areas, as shown by referral areas and vials. The Lyme spirochete is also transmitted in utero. Bartonella, Babesia, Erlichea, and Mycoplasmas also seem to be passed between partners. Vials that are specific to the ovaries and uterus, etc. show to weaken after unprotected sex with a partner. I have seen two cases where protection was used, and yet it seems to have passed by infection of spirochetes in the mouth.

The uterus is an inverted organ so the order on the meridian is reversed as well. While for the penis and clitoris, the distal points on the feet treat the surface expression of the organs, the vaginal area is teated at the knee. The uterus is SP 6.
Fallopian Tubes and Fimbrae (vas deferens): KI 1-10. (K10 is near the ovary.)
Entrenched disease will move up or down these channels. Best to check every point on the KI, LV, and SP meridians up to the knee. Points around pubis and sacrum also must be cleared. Try using Korean hand acupuncture points that correspond to those points and areas.
Shoulders:
Many inflamed rotator cuffs originating with an inflamed disc in the neck, shorting out muscles and nerves to the arms and hands. If the problem is bilateral, it is almost always due to neck problems. The 5th through the 7th cervical vertebrae control the nerves to the arms and hands. Treat by clearing and strengthening those rows on the Spine Chart. The cartilage in the cuff itself can also get infested with spirochetes. LU 1-2 treat the cuff.
Sinus:
Frontal: ST44-41 is the sinus proper, but SP1-4 treats the frontal mucosa. LI1-5 treats the nose and Lu 11 -7 the nasal mucosa.
Maxillary: SP 9-10.
Ethmoid: UB 60-57. K 1-4 for mucosa.

Acupressure for Weight Control

Acupuncture.  I combined body acupuncture with auricular acupuncture points. For the body, the most important points are ST-34,  Liang Qiu points and SP-4, Gong Sun.  Liang Qiu points belong to the stomach meridian and can inhibit stomach activity and make the food absorption slower and decrease the appetite.  Gong Sun SP-4 is a point of the spleen, which can increase the body’s metabolism and decrease the appetite, too.  Ren 12 (Zhong Wan) and Ren 3 (Guang Yuan) are local points adjacent to the stomach and intestine, they directly affect and facilitate the bowel movement, therefore, inhibit the absorption of the food in the GI system.
Pic 10-1 and 10-2:

Table 10-1
Auricular needles are the most important part for weight loss program. I chose the points of spleen,  stomach, liver, small intestine and Sheng Meng.  These points can inhibit stomach activity, slow the absorption of nutrition from food in the stomach and small intestine, also improve energy of human body and decrease the stress and depression.  The patients should press the ear needles to lessen their craving for food while she or he feels hungry.  The points on the liver, endocrine and Sheng Meng may reduce the stress and anxiety, in  adjunction with the points of spleen, stomach and small intestine, to decrease the craving sensation.  It is possible to  substitute vegetable or plastic seeds in place of the needles, for those who fear needles, and generally speaking, they will have
the same effect.

Acupressure for Infertility

Definition of Infertility:

a disease of the reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.(WHO).

There are many causes of infertility, including the following:

For the male:

1. Impaired production and function of sperm, low sperm concentration. Normal sperm concentration is greater than or equal to 20 million sperm per milliliter of semen. A count of 10 million or fewer sperm per milliliter of semen indicates low sperm concentration, and the chances of conception lessen. A count of 40 million sperm or higher per milliliter of semen indicates increased fertility; also, if a sperm changes its shape and mobility or is slow, the sperm may not be able to reach or penetrate the egg.
2. The malfunction of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Axis: if the axis is not working properly, the male hormone level will be disturbed and the sperm will be both low in count and slow in activity.
3. The testes system, including transportation and maturation.

For the female:

1. Fallopian tube damage or blockage.
2. Endometriosis.
3. Ovulation disorders.
4. Hormonal causes, such as hypothyroidism,
4. Early menopause.
5. Polycystic ovary syndrome.
6. Fibroid in the uterine.
Even though there are many women who cannot conceive because of the above reasons, there are also 15-20 % of couples who cannot conceive due to unexplained reasons, and Amy falls into this category. Therefore, many couples have to use the following technology for help.

Assistant Reproductive Technology:

1.     Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination is the placement of a man’s sperm into a woman’s uterus using a long, narrow tube, which usually help the sperm to go upstream to meet eggs. The successful rate sometimes can be 20%.

2.     In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Eggs and sperm are taken from the couple and are incubated together in a dish in a laboratory to produce an embryo. The embryo then will be placed into the woman’s uterus, where it may implant and result in a successful pregnancy.

A. IVF stimulation protocols in the US generally involve the use of 3 types of drugs:

1), Medications to suppress the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge and ovulation until the developing eggs are ready.

There are 2 classes of drug used for this:
GnRH-agonist (gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist) such as Lupron,
GnRH-antagonist such as Ganirelix or Cetrotide
Lupron essentially “shuts down” the body’s reproductive hormone system.
While shut down, IVF patients use a follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) drug like Gonal-F or Follistim, to cause the recruitment and development of follicles. Dosages of FSH are adjusted based upon each patient’s response and it is continued until the follicles are mature.

2), FSH product (follicle stimulating hormone) to stimulate development of multiple eggs

Gonal-F, Follistim, Bravelle, Menopur

3), HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) to cause final maturation of the eggs

The ovaries are stimulated with the injectable FSH medications for about 7-12 days until multiple mature size follicles have developed.
Ovulation cannot occur naturally while on Lupron because LH, which triggers ovulation, is suppressed. This prevents a premature surge of the LH before the retrieval, which could cause loss of the cycle. Once the eggs are mature, an injection of Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or LH is given to stimulate ovulation. Egg retrieval is scheduled 35 hours later.

 B. Egg Retrieval:

this is the process used to remove the eggs from the ovaries   so they can be fertilized.

C. Fertilization:

the sperms are placed in a dish with the egg and left overnight in an incubator. Fertilization usually occurs on its own. However, sometimes, a single sperm is injected into an egg using a needle. This process is called intracytoplasmic  sperm injection (ICSI). About 60% of IVF in the Unites States is performed with ICSI.Embryos that develop from IVF are placed into the uterus from 1 to 6 days after retrieval.

 D. Embryo Transfer:

a long, thin tube will be inserted through the vagina and into the uterus and injects the embryo into the uterus. The embryo should implant into the lining of the uterus 6 to 10 days after retrieval.

Evidence of Acupuncture as an adjunct to IVF

Now, more and more evidence show acupuncture as an excellent adjunct to IVF. In one article published in Evidence Based Complement Alternative Medicine, 2012, Zheng, et al found out that Twenty-three trials ( a total of 5598 participants)  indicate that acupuncture, especially around the time of the controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, improves pregnancy outcomes in women undergoing IVF.

Amy’s treatment:

Amy was scheduled to have hormone regulation (hormone treatment) for a month before trying to become pregnant again, and to have acupuncture treatments with me three times a week during that month.

After four weeks of treatment, Amy underwent the IVF procedure and was kept on the acupuncture treatment twice a week. Amy reported to me that she had eight eggs mature, a much improvement compared with  the first IVF treatment which had produced only three mature eggs.
After a 48 to 72 hour culture, six of her eggs were fertilized and Amy’s doctor implanted four into the uterus. The doctor told her she should have bed rest overnight and that she could return to work the next day; however, I told her to have bed rest for two days, because Amy’s job is more stressful than most people’s, and she has to bend forward in her work to deliver babies.
A month after insemination Amy told me she was pregnant. She was very excited about her condition and eight months later delivered twins, a boy and a girl. She was thrilled with the results, as was her husband.

acupressure for allergy and sinusitis

  1. Allergic sinusitis.  We use LI 20 (Ying Xiang), which corresponding to maxillary sinus,  LI11 (Qu Chi), LI 4(He Gu) and GB 20 (Feng Chi).
Frontal sinusitis: add UB 2 (Zan Zhu)
Ethmoid sinusitis: add SI 18 (Quan Liao)

Acupressure Tips for patients:
  1. The key acupressure points are LI 20, UB2 and GB14. You will feel your sinus opening by pressing the above points in both sides for 5 min of each and 2 to 3 sessions.
  2. Irrigating your sinuses with normal saline or some Chinese herbs solution might give you a significant improvement.
Acupuncture Tips for Practitioners:
  1. By electrical stimulation the points of LI 20 (Ying Xiang), UB 2 (Zan Zhu)  and GB 14 (Yang Bai), you may give patients a surprise that their sinusitis and headache might go away within one to two sessions, because the above points may increase the opening of the sinus and drain the sinus. The patients will feel “the pressure over the sinus” are much less after the treatment.
  2. LI 20 (Ying Xiang) is the outlet of the large intestine meridian and is adjacent to the nose, thus LI 20 connects the nose to the sinus after stimulation of the point. By stimulation of points of LI 20, UB 2 and GB 14, the treatment desensitizes the mucus membrane and decreases the amount of secretion. Hu Gu is the original location of the large intestine point, which can make the invasion of the allergen decrease and also will expel the allergen from the body. GB 20 (Feng Chi) will  enhance LI 4 (He Gu) of the  function to expel the invasion of the allergen.
Type II
For allergic eye symptoms we use GB20 (Feng  Chi ), LI11 (Qu Chi), LI 4(He Gu) plus the followings, St 1 (Cheng Qi),  St 2 (Si Bai), SJ 23 (Si Zu Kong) GB 14 (Yang Bai), GB 1 (Tong Zi Liao), UB 2 (Zan Zhu), UB 1 (Qing Ming), ST 8 (Tou Wei) and Ex-HN5 (Tai Yang).
For itching in the ear, add SJ 21 (Er Meng) and SI 19 (Ting Gong), GB 2 (Ting Hui).
See Table 4-2,  Pic 4-1 and Pic 4-2
chart6pic7Acupressure Tips for patients:
  1. For patient with itching ear and tinnitus, SI 19, SJ 21 and GB 2 are the best choice. You may press the above points for 3 to 5 min, 2 to 3 sessions per day for  2 weeks, you will realize the beauty of the points.
  2. For tearing and itching eye, GB 1, UB1 and St 1 are good choice.
Acupuncture Tips for practitioners:
  1. Electrical stimulations for SI 19, SJ 21 and GB 2 will greatly improve hearing, tinnitus and decrease the ear itching. You have to further differentiate the symptoms based on the patient’s body types,  there are two subtypes:
    1. Kidney Yang deficiency accompanied with symptom of cold in all 4 extremities, fatigue, and clean and long urine: add UB 23 (Sheng Shu) see Pic 3-1 and table 3-4.
    2. Gall Bladder fire excess accompanied with symptom of thirty, bitter in the mouth, inflamed eye, add GB 34 (Yang Ling Quan)  and Li 3 (Tai Chong).
Pic 4-3
chart8
  1. GB 20 (Feng Chi) ( See Pic 1-1 and table 1-1)  protects the patient from the allergen invasion and strengthens the immune function of the human body.  St 8 (Tou Wei) and Ex-HN5 (Tai Yang) are around the scalp, and will decrease headaches.

pic10Initially Dan J underwent my treatment for four visits.   On his first visit, after about 20 minutes, his eyes were dry and his sinuses had stopped running, which made him happy and much more comfortable.   With three more treatments, his symptoms were almost gone. After discussing the case with his mother, Dan J came back for continued treatment, for a total of ten visits.  His problem was mainly due to a weakened immune system with deficiency of Kidney and Lung.  he needed acupuncture to help him improve these systems, thus casting off the effects of allergens on his body.
After subsiding his symptom, Dan was advised to return to my office during summer for about 12 visits, even then he did not have any symptom. After these treatments, Dan’s immune system was much strengthened, he only needed to come to me at the beginning of the next few  allergy seasons for five to six visits. Recently, however, his symptoms are so much improved, that he no longer needs to consult me, even at the beginning of new allergy season.

Tips for everybody:
“Strengthening your Yang in the summer, nourishing your Ying in the winter” is the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which guides TCM practitioners for more than two thousand years. It means that the patients of allergy, sinusitis and asthma should be treated during summer for strengthening their Yang, i.e. immune system. The acupuncture points are UB 13 (Lung, Fei Shu), UB 15 (Heart, Xin Shu), UB 20 (Spleen, Pi Shu) and UB 23 (Kidney, Shen Shu). This is the reason  I requested Dan J came to my office during summer for 12 visits.

Acupressure and Drug abuse

Chinese medicine and acupuncture have a long history of treating drug abuse.  The two types of treatments are:
  1. Auricular acupuncture
  2. Body acupuncture.
The main functions of the acupuncture treatment are to decrease the withdrawal symptoms and improve the patient’s depression and brain function.  There are many studies supporting these treatments and the most well known is that acupuncture can directly increase the level of endogenous endorphin, which makes the patient feel calm, relaxed and cheerful.  Acupuncture can also directly stimulate the central nervous system to make the patient feel less depressed and lessen the craving for drugs.
For auricular acupuncture, I use the lung, endocrine, liver, spleen and large intestine points corresponding to these organs. .  The lung has an opening through the nose and when people abuse heroin, the lung point will protect the lung function and strengthen the immune system.   The endocrine points increase endorphin secretion and increase people’s immune function to protect the entire body.  Liver and spleen points improve circulation and also improve the taste in the mouth because the spleen and stomach have openings in mouth and large intestine points; the intestine and the lung have direct meridian connection, so if we improve the function of the large intestine, this in turn will directly improve the lung function.
Pic 6-1

For the body acupuncture points, the most important ones are on the head. I use Baihui DU20 plus shi sheng chong Exn1, total five points, which can directly stimulate the central nervous system when I add electrical stimulation to the needles.  They send current directly to the cortex of the brain, which greatly improves the patient’s mood and decreases the depression.  Shuaigu GB8, which is on the head 1.5 inches above the tip of the auricular is directly connected to the sensory cortex, which will improve the body’s sensation and make it dislike the taste of heroin.  Hegu L14 is a point that can largely increase endorphin secretion and Qu Chi L111 will give a better functioning effect.  Neiguan Pc6 is a point of the pericardium meridian, which also helps improve mental functions.  Lu7 is the point from the lung meridian which protects the lung from attacks of heroin and improves the immune function of the lung.
Pic 6-2

After treatment of two weeks, the patient started to feel decreased withdrawal symptoms and had more energy.  However, he sometimes still feels cravings for heroin, and he has some physical weakness, with muscle spasms in his arms and legs.  He also experienced restlessness and agitation, often accompanied by insomnia.  I continued the acupuncture treatments three to four times a week for eight weeks, while also discussing the short and long term effects of heroin use and what organs would be effected and harmed by continued use.  He told me that, in spite of the withdrawal symptoms, he still felt much better with the treatments and he is happy to treat his addiction in this fashion, rather than go into a methadone program, at which point his drug use would become generally known.  By coming to me, he can be treated in private for his addiction.

Acupressure for Smoking

Treatment
(1) Auricular acupuncture treatment, i.e. Ear embedding needles.  First we find the most painful points on the ear, those usually corresponding to the heart and sympathetic system. I regularly use Sheng Meng, Heart, Lung, Endocrine and Large Intestine. I insert the needles at the auricular points.  These needles stay in  the ear for seven days and every day the patient presses the needles for 4 to 5 minutes per hour, which lessens the craving for the nicotine in a cigarette.  He also presses the needles anytime he gets the urge to smoke.  It is possible to bathe or shower with the needles imbedded in the ear, but the patient must be on the alert for any signs of inflammation or infection.
(2) Laser treatment. Laser needles can also be used on the auricular acupuncture points. aiming directly at the ear for usually 2 to 3 mm.  For each treatment, four pints are used for 15 minutes each time, with the total treatment about 25 to 30 minute.  This is done 3 times a week for 4 to 8 weeks.
  1. Auricular acupuncture point injections. 0.5% sodium chloride can be injected for each day one or two points, always changing the points after each injection. Endocrine, sheng meng, stomach, liver and lung points are often used.
  2. Electrical stimulation for the ear. I usually select sheng meng, lung and endocrine, and use a 1 inch needle in both ears and do six points, then employ electrical stimulation for about 30 minutes and continue this treatment every other day for a total of  four weeks.
  3. Body acupuncture. Emotional burden, such as stress, anxiety, poor sleep and depression can force many people to smoke, therefore, body acupuncture can help to reduce emotional problem.
1, Type 1: Energy deficiency of the heart and lung,  auricular points are heart, sympathetic, sheng meng, body points are Zhong Fu, Ju Que, Nei Guan, Fei Shu, Xin Shu, San Yin Jiao, Chi Zhe.

treated with both ear and body acupuncture.  He had three treatments a week for eight weeks, and after the first week he reduced his intake to one pack of cigarettes a day and the second week he stopped smoking. After the total time of eight weeks he was completely off cigarettes.
In my experience, the first two weeks are the most crucial time for the patient, because the nicotine withdrawal syndrome is the most severe and the patient is depressed, agitated, sometimes anxious and suffering from insomnia, and any of these can cause a return to smoking.  If I treat the patient with ear acupuncture, he can constantly press the needles embedded in the ear, which will decrease his craving for a cigarette and will enforce the psychological support. If the patient knows all the consequences of smoking, and desires to quit, he usually can do so with acupuncture.  Most succeed with the right attitude toward the consequences of continuing to smoke.

Tips for acupuncturists:
Education, education! This is the most important part. If the patient is not willing to quit, there is no way to force the patient to quit.
  1. Encouragement: You have to encourage the patient to stick to the program.
  2. Support: you have to get support from the patient’s family and friends.
Tips for patients:
  1. Be determined and stick to the program: the first 2 weeks are the most difficult time. If you can stick to it, you will win the war.
  2. Think about your future and your family’s future, you do not want to set up a wrong role model for your children and family members.
